Surprise!!!

I know, it’s been a while since I last blogger about my garden. Well… it’s not that amazing really. I didn’t realizes that most people start out with plants, and not seeds, which is why my garden is taking forever. Of course, four of my plants are root plants, and despite the itch I have to pick them, I need to wait. Wait….wait….wait…. boo.

But here is a picture of my current garden:

Pretty, huh? Thanks. We’ve come a long way.

Here is the weird little cucumber that is refusing to grow. Like seriously… it’s been over a week, and he’s still this weird little ball.

I have atleast 3 or 4 good sized beets growing…

And some carrots…

And umm… no yellow squash to speak of….

BUT BY GOLLY, we have zucchini.

Haha, I know it’s only two, but seriously… these things grow OVERNIGHT! I looked yesterday, and there where ZERO Zucchinis (one of these I picked earlier this week). There like, a little 2 inch baby zucchini, but nothing big. Then this morning,

POW!!!

ZUCCHINI POWER!!!!

Yes, it was exactly like that. Here’s hoping a ton of stuff grows while I”m gone. I don’t know how to cut back that giant zucchini plant. Any tips?

PS: These are au naturel, sort of. There was fertilizer in the intitial soil mix, but I have not added anything since that point.

Get up & keep going…

I had a dream last night that every one, including myself, forgot my birthday. This may be a good thing, as my seems to be unable to remember that I am aging… I told my own mother I was a year younger than I really am… honest accident. Sometimes I think dreams mean something… like the time I dreamt about Rigoletto a million times. I don’t know what it meant, but it has to mean something… right? Ok. This is a tangent. I just woke up so of course dreams are on my mind. lol.

I rode my bike to school yesterday, and I’m going to ride it in again today. I need to call the place that fixed it though, because now that it is in first gear (of the bigger gears) it won’t shift to second or third. It’s okay because I have the 1-6 gears on the other side, which give me enough variety to ride comfortably, but I got it fixed so that I could ride better, and I paid $100 to get it fixed. Hopefully they’ll just fix it up for free… since I already paid for it and they obviously didn’t do something right. I’ll keep you updated on that.

I did ride my bike into class yesterday. But, as I left class to meet up with a study group the sky turned black. Yes – black, not gray… it looked like it was night time. Yeah… I had checked, and it wasn’t supposed to rain until 5… but as the heaven’s opened up at 3:03 I tried to not panic. Luckily one of the girls in my study group lives near me, and she kindly shoved my bike in the back of her car so that I didn’t have to ride home and risk getting hit by lightning, or getting soaked. So, yesterday I only biked 4 miles. Looking at the weather today, it is supposed to start raining much earlier, and continue until much later. THIS SUCKS! lol. I hate taking advantage of people, but I also hate being a lazy bum.

Speaking of classes, they are going well. My Western Civ class is everyday, but I kind of really like it. I don’t know why I haven’t ever taken summer classes before, but honestly – best idea ever. I am shoving an entire semester of my least favorite subject into a month! And FYI… that month is almost over! Only three more weeks of class. In Western Civ we have a map quiz and a short essay quiz every week (one of Tuesday, one of Thursday). Then in my World Religions class we meet twice a week, and have a 5 question multiple choice quiz once a week. It’s not so bad. It is kind of crazy that, including today, there are only 6 class periods left. I should definitely get on top of writing my final paper. And reading. lol.

My garden in floundering. The green squash are growing like crazy, and the potatoes are thriving, but everything else seems to be frozen in the same state they were in a few weeks ago. I’m not really sure what to do with them. Should we replant? Should I just leave them and hope for the best? Who knows? lol, definitely not me!

Well, now I need to go and figure out if I can ride my bike or not. I think I will call my friend and see if she minds giving me a ride home tonight, should the weather looks sketchy. Wish me luck!

On the un-mends.

I thought I was mending. My sunburn stopped hurting. I was feel good, I even rode my bike to class on Monday. Then Monday night I started feeling sick, and I was freezing cold… my house is 80+ degrees… it was crazy! Then my body got all confused because, well… it’s kind of gross but because of the sunburn on my back the sweat couldn’t get out of my skin, so my kind husband… well… there were lots of little bubbles that needed popped, and lots of skin that needed removed. I don’t know that I could be convinced to do the same for him with out throwing up. But he’s such a sweet man, lol. I don’t think my own Mama would’ve down it! lol. So, after the trapped sweat was… gone… my body was unsure of how to regulate it’s self, what with 1/6th of my other epidurmis missing.

Gross.

Any way, today my skin is red again, itchy, painful, tight. Everything it was two days ago. As much as I like riding my bike – if I can’t carry a back-pack, I can’t do it. So, instead I had to drive. I guess this burn is worse than I thought. I’ll just work on not sweating, or laying down. Gah!!!

In other news… my garden is growing. I should get my lazy butt out their to take a picture, and I will… eventually. Like, half of my plants are refusing to grow. But… we will have potatoes. That’s exciting, right? lol.

I will get back to actually blogging about my life when I’m not in such a tizzy over the pain of this ridiculous sunburn. In the mean time, forgive me. :)

And Pretty Maids All in a Row…

It’s been a while since I blogged about my garden. I was waiting for some marked improvment, so it didn’t look like I was just posting the same pictures over and over again.

All of my plants have come in. Less than half of my green beans are growing though:

The potatoes are really incredible. They grew like 2 inches, over night! Yeah, it’s kind of crazy.

But everything is growing, and that is the important part!

I am kind of worried because we are going on vacation for a week, and I am worried about them getting watered. Eek!

We might go buy one of those timer things, and just let it water itself.

I know you can’t see all of the plants, but trust me, they’re-a-growin’!

With Silver Bells, And Cockle Shells

Really – there aren’t silver bells OR cockle shells in my garden. But there are other things. Along with my squash, zucchini, cucmber and beets, some of plants popped up last night.

My neighbors probably think I’m crazy from all of the dancing I do out there.

^  The onions have sprouted. There are a few of these little greenies peaking out of the ground.

^ I also have green beans coming up now! these were the big surprise, as last night the dirt was still packed, and this morning these big things popped up. Unlike the vined plants – which came up with little leaves and have grown, these ones are already comparable to the cucumbers!

^ Lastly… we have one carrot. Sad, since this is the plant I was most looking forward too. Maybe more will come up tonight!

I’m not sure what to think or do about the potatoes. Do they have some kind of leaf that works it way up above the ground, or do they just stay buried the whole time?

To be honest, I am really surprised at how well this is working out! Hopefully they will continue to grow, and one day we’ll have something to eat… until then… our grocery budget is gone… so we’ll be eating a lot of rice!

How Does Your Garden Grow?

{I typed and published this post once already, but it disappeared. Who knows what happened to it!?!? }

So… can you see all of my beautiful plants?

No? Let me help then…

That’s better. Now, for some close ups!

I know – some of these pictures are blurry something awful, sometimes when the camera is in my purse the setting get changed, and then I take crappy pictures. please forgive me.

I had to edit in some of the texts too. I waited until the sun was behind the trees to take the pictures. I think that is were my problem started.

Oh well, at least the plants are growing! As these pictures are from two days ago, we also have a few new additions!

MY ONIONS ARE COMING UP!

Now I’m just waiting on the green beans, carrots, and potatoes… but only if potatoes have something come up and stick out of the ground. If not… they might be growing. lol.

I know that normally my garden posts always include a picture of my dogs, but today I have a special treat for you all!

Look, it’s my neighbor’s dogs! These dogs are outside all day. They bark, all day. They are in a fence in the front yard, and they gaurd the front door. That means no one can get to the front door. That means when people come over… they sit in the drive way and honk. For a long time. It gets annoying. I feel bad for the B-man who sits through it every day, all day. He’s so patient.

The Garden

Today we planted our seeds! It was such a beautiful day, and I love just being outside with B-man and the dogs. It’s fantastic!
For Easter my Aunt gave me some Star Shaped sticky notes, in honor of my blogs name. So I decided to use them to continue this motif into our garden.
As I was making these tags B-man says “This is very teachery of you.” “Oh really?” … “Ummm… yeah… it seems like something a teacher would do.”
I think it was the handwriting on some of them.
B-man also told me how impressed he was with my drive to get this done. Yah!!!
I know it seems silly, because we’re moving in December, but I have always wanted to be more self sufficient, and right now this is all I can do, and I’m going to do it.
I think he believes now, when I say I want a cow. His response is “Eventually” or “Later” … so I guess “we’ll” see.
For now I will stick with the vegetables. I kind of wish we had planted some berries, but that’s okay, maybe next time.
Recently we have been talking about the future. What?! B-man is not a planner. He’s just a do-er. I on the other hand tend to over plan. So this is often a cause of tension.
We’ll be driving home from a wonderful date and I’ll pop this sucker on him:
“So when are we going to have babies.”
And some times the poor man will listen to my long rant about when would be the best times…
and some times he says “yesterday” or “in 50 years.” It varies.
Last night though, we had a wonderful conversation. There has been a lot of baby talk, but also a lot of Grad-school talk. And honestly, the both do not seem compatible to me. But who knows… there may be an itty-bitty-b-man in the next year or two!

Cheaper than dirt…

Table of Contents:
1. Food
2. Garden
3. Date Night
4. New Job!
First things first! I wanted to share a few pictures of the recipes I have been making from that cookbook. What do we have here?
Chicken Salad. It was supposed to be crab salad… but that scared me… so I used canned chicken instead. Probably would’ve been better with the crab… if I liked crab. Hmm… I’ll figure this out eventually.
Spaghetti with meat sauce. Umm… there was nothing diet about it. Love! It was just a matter of portions, which is beautiful, because it was more than enough food, and I made extra since this is one of B-man’s most favorite meals.
Creamy Pasta Salad. I followed all of the directions, including every vegetable they told me to put into it, but at the end of the day… I think I will leave some of the veggies out. BUT… I am doing this with an open mind, I tried it… and I don’t like it. Boo.
Next! Number Two: Brandan and I made our garden. We have not planted yet… but we bought lumber, learned how to put the back seat down, brought it home, built it, put dirt and cow poop in it... voilà! Garden!

We took turns dumping in back of top soil, potting soil, pete moss, and compost (cow poop!).

“B-man! Be careful, we paid for that dirt?!”
“Yeah? Was it cheaper than dirt?”
“No… I think it cost about the same as dirt.”

We’re going to plant Cucumbers, Beets, Onions, Yellow and Green Summer Squash, Carrots, Spinach and Potatoes. Actually… the potatoes are done. They’re layered in the orange tub. They’re Yukon Gold potatoes.

The dogs got to be
outside… all day. I really think they enjoyed it, since that does not happen very often.

I’m surprised they are so active and vocal right now, I figured they would be worn out!

Item of business # 3: We went out tonight. Because we woke up pretty late, and we both had an excess of calories to spend, we decided to go out to dinner. We didn’t get dessert like we tend to do. Then we went and saw “Date Night” which was REALLY funny. I was kind of worried it would be a tad bit stressful, but I found myself laughing… a lot! If you like Tina Fey, or that boss guy from the Office, then you will probably love this movie.

LASTLY! I apparently have a new job…
As Zuko’s bed.

I was pretty exhausted, and B-man was doing the dishes, and I just wanted to go to bed, and apparently I was taking up too much of the couch. Serves me right I guess!

How does your garden grow?

Because mine is growing really well. I can’t say it is fantastic because only 50% of my plants our out of the ground (4/8), but I am excited none the less. Can you see them?

No? Here, I’ll circle them for you.

Is that better? Now I know you’re dieing for come close-ups! Right?

Green Squash

Yellow Summer Squash

That says "Cucumbers."

And little beets, all in a row.

There ya go! Thanks for sharing in my ridiculous amount of excitement over little green leaves. No need to tell me I’m crazy, I already know!

Last but not least, this post would not be complete with out a picture of a dog, but I can do you one better!

The Three Stoop-Dogs

I know, THREE DOGS! I bet you weren’t expecting that. No, their not mine. They belong to my neighbor. They are outside all day. They bark like crazy. No one can ring their doorbell because of the dogs, so people just sit in the drive way and honk.  Poor form.

Life as I know it…

Hello… life has been kind of busy, but I’ll try to sum things up for you.
Gretel has taken over the couch. I don’t know that we will ever regain control of our furniture. Thankfully, she has also become (magically?) quite obedient, so “Go Lay Down” has her sulking into the office to lay down on her bed.
This sight kind of made me laugh. Can you guess which pillow is mine? I guess I’m kind of clingy… or cold. I start out at the wall and end up on the other side! Maybe it happens when he gets up in the morning and leaves a warm spot under the covers. Hmm… yes.

Tuesday evening B-man made dinner while I was in class. It was sweet and sour chicken, and it was delicious. Fantastic! Wonderful!!! I am so thankful for him… he did the dishes too. I’m pretty spoiled.
Today started out like this! When I bake for bake sales, I tend to go semi-homemade. I still had to mix and bake and decorate, but I didn’t have to measure out all of the ingredients. Win win! For this baking event B-man bought me a cookie scooper, to make the job easier. LOVE!
I didn’t get pictures of the cookies, but I did get a picture of the cupcakes. This white frosting with soft candies in it is probably my favorite frosting ever!

Once the baking was finished B-man really wanted to out to eat. His buddies from the office all went out to lunch today, and I guess he felt a bit left out. Don’t have to tell me twice! We recently found this Mexican restaurant called “Cancun’s” near Kroger on Chapman Hwy… best food ever, and the portions are huge. I’ve never finished a meal here. It’s fantastic! He got the enchiladas, and I got the chimichanga!
Then we went to Lowes, and bought a garden, complete with walls, dirt, seeds, gloves and tools. It will definitely be an adventure. Now we just need to find a home for it!
The last thing we did was go to Deaf Night at Barley’s. I get extra credit for it, so there really is no reason to NOT go. We didn’t stay as long as we did last time. It was crowded, and kind of awkward where we were sitting… surrounded by a bunch of people who didn’t know any one.
Instead we went home, watched a movie, and now I’m going to bed! <3
